Спица. To put a spoke in someone's wheel — ставить кому-либо палки в колёса, не давать делать что-либо. Это английское выражение звучит довольно странно, т. к. колёса велосипедов уже имеют спицы. Здесь, однако, упоминаются времена, когда повозки имели сплошные колёса, без спиц. В то время the spoke назывался a pin (штифт), который вставлялся в отверстие колеса и выполнял роль тормоза. Слово spoke могло быть неправильным переводом голландского выражения, включающего слово spaak, означающего перекладину, брусок или палку.
